Three Max Planck institutes, two Frauenhofer institutes, a Helmholz Centre, a Leibnitz institute and the German Biomass Research Centre – in addition to numerous other research facilities, they are some of the driving forces of the local economy.

Specialists for all fields of study are educated at 11 universities in the region. For example, the Leipzig Graduate School of Management (Handelshochschule Leipzig, or HHL) is one of the most respected business schools in Europe and is Germany’s premier address for management training and the development of young specialists.
