The future of mobility - made in Leipzig

Automotive & supplier industry connected to emerging markets

Since Porsche and BMW settled here in 2000 and 2002, the Region of Leipzig has developed into an attractive location for the entire vehicle production value-added chain. These two premium manufacturers have repeatedly expanded their capacity in the north of the city within the past few years and their roughly 10,000 employees now produce approximately 1,500 vehicles per day in their state-of-the-art plants.

170 innovative suppliers from mechanical engineering and special machine construction, tool engineering, metalworking and material processing, electronics and IT have followed the large settlements and significantly contribute to the continuous growth of the industry with their innovation and services. The number of employees in the automobile and supplier industry has almost doubled since 2005.

The Region of Leipzig is thereby a key driver in the development of electromobility. BMW is producing its i3 and i8 electric vehicles for the first time in serial production here. The Leipzig BMW plant is considered one of the most sustainable automobile plants in the world and is among the global leaders in the areas of electromobility and intelligent lightweight construction with carbon. The City of Leipzig itself is promoting the use of electric vehicles and is also ensuring the expansion of the necessary infrastructure as part of new, intelligent traffic concepts.

The traffic infrastructure is one of the most modern in Europe and connects the region with the entire world.

Regional networks for the automobile and supplier industry

Institutes such as the Frauenhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU) or the Kunststoff-Zentrum (Plastics Centre) Leipzig are available as regional research partners and trendsetters for innovations in the automotive industry. The Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK Leipzig) researches, among other things, the areas of electromobility, energy efficiency and production technology.
