Leipzig Region investment among the best in Europe

Major success for the Leipzig economic region: At the Investment Impact Awards, presented by the British magazine fDi Intelligence to investment projects with significant economic and societal transformation potential, the Skeleton Technologies project in Markranstädt secured third place in the category “Top 10 Most Operational Mid-Sized Projects in Europe.” Invest Region Leipzig GmbH supported the investment with comprehensive services throughout the settlement process. More than 100 submissions from 27 countries were entered for the Investment Impact Awards. The project in Markranstädt is the only investment project located in Germany to receive an award. The awards ceremony took place on March 10 in Cannes during MIPIM, one of the world’s most important real estate trade fairs.

World’s largest factory for production of supercapacitors

The German-Estonian GreenTech company Skeleton Technologies invested around €220 million in its Superfactory, which was inaugurated in November 2025. The facility, the world’s largest factory for the production of special energy storage devices known as supercapacitors, combines state-of-the-art automation, sustainable construction and innovative energy storage technology. In the long term, the project is expected to create more than 400 jobs.

Large availability of industrial sites in the Leipzig Region

During the search for a suitable location, the region was able to offer several site options. In the end, Markranstädt was selected. Decisive factors included the compelling combination of attractive industrial sites, the strong potential of qualified skilled workers, the political commitment in the region, and the comprehensive support provided by Invest Region Leipzig GmbH (IRL). Through its network in the regional real estate market, IRL played a key role in the site selection process, connecting Skeleton Technologies with local stakeholders from politics and administration and providing tailored services through its skilled workforce support.

“IRL supported the settlement of Skeleton Technologies from the very beginning. The decision in favor of Markranstädt clearly demonstrates the attractiveness of the Leipzig Region for innovative high-tech companies whose business models benefit both the economy and the environment. The recent recognition at the Investment Impact Awards also highlights the significant site potential available in the region”, says Michael Körner, Managing Director of Invest Region Leipzig GmbH.

Henry Graichen, District Administrator of the Leipzig Region, emphasizes:
“I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Skeleton Technologies and Invest Region Leipzig GmbH. This important award and its presentation on the major stage in Cannes is also a strong signal for our entire region. Promoting our location advantages, offering investors attractive and suitable sites, and providing highly qualified skilled workers will continue to be the right path for the future.”

About Skeleton Technologies

The success story of Skeleton Technologies began in 2009 in Tartu. The company quickly established itself as a pioneer in the production of supercapacitors, which can absorb and release energy significantly faster than conventional batteries. These technologies are used, for example, in the automotive industry, the IT sector, and in power grids. One of the company’s first customers was the European Space Agency.

With the development and patenting of the material “Curved Graphene", the company set new standards within its industry. In spring 2025, Skeleton Technologies was included in the list of the “World’s Top GreenTech Companies” published by TIME. The opening of the Superfactory in Markranstädt took place in the presence of Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal and Michael Kretschmer, Prime Minister of Saxony.

About the Investment Impact Awards

The Investment Impact Awards are presented by fDi Intelligence, a specialist magazine of the Financial Times. The awards recognize foreign investment projects with the greatest transformation potential in three categories, highlighting locations that offer strong conditions for investment across various industries and business sectors.

All projects are evaluated based on their economic and social impact. Assessment criteria include, among others, job creation, the quality of employment, innovation, and sustainability. An independent expert jury also examines the role of investment promotion agencies in attracting high-impact foreign direct investment (FDI) projects and in supporting companies throughout the investment process.
