Blackpin IoT Chooses Leipzig
Invest Region Leipzig GmbH (IRL) is pleased to announce another exciting new investment in the region: Blackpin IoT. The start-up, which combines healthcare and IT and aims to revolutionize the nursing care sector in the coming years, has chosen Leipzig as its new location.
The young company is a spin-off of Blackpin GmbH, which has extensive experience in secure digital communication and IoT applications. Its BLACKPIN Messenger is a GDPR-compliant communication app designed for frontline healthcare teams.
This expertise is now being directly incorporated into Blackpin IoT and its DecubiMat, an intelligent, AI-powered sensor mattress based on space technology developed by the European Space Agency (ESA). “The idea emerged from real-world nursing care challenges and the growing shortage of healthcare professionals. By 2030, the number of people requiring care in Germany is expected to double, while the country will face a shortage of around 500,000 nursing professionals,” explains Sandra Jörg, founder and Managing Director. “Some of the initial inspiration came directly from customers who were already using our BLACKPIN Messenger. They showed us where information was missing in everyday nursing care and how much time was spent repositioning patients and documenting care activities. This led to the idea of combining sensor technology, AI, and secure communication.”
Collaboration with ICCAS and Leipzig University Hospital
The DecubiMat is designed to help family members and professional caregivers provide safe and effective care for people in need, including in their own homes. The mattress detects movements and lying positions and transmits vital signs data to help prevent pressure ulcers. At its new location in Leipzig, Blackpin IoT is collaborating with the ICCAS – Innovation Center Computer Assisted Surgery and Leipzig University Hospital on the scientific validation and further development of its product.
Invest Region Leipzig GmbH (IRL) supported the company throughout its establishment process, including assistance with site selection and introductions to relevant partners from its extensive network. These included Sächsische Aufbaubank (SAB), where Blackpin IoT successfully applied for the Business Angel Bonus funding program, as well as the digital health incubator InnoTrack.
Michael Körner, Managing Director of IRL, comments: "Against the backdrop of demographic change, nursing care is becoming an increasingly important issue in Germany. This makes innovative companies like Blackpin IoT, which are introducing new approaches to addressing challenges in this sector, all the more valuable. I am delighted that the company has found excellent conditions for its growth in Leipzig and wish the entire team every success in the future!"
