MolGenie expands to Leipzig
Leipzig’s life sciences ecosystem is gaining another high-profile player: Pharmaceutical company MolGenie specializes in computer-aided drug discovery for the development of innovative medicines.
Leipzig offers ideal conditions for business growth
MolGenie was founded by Dr. Lutz Weber, who earned both his doctorate and habilitation at the University of Leipzig. Like Dr. Wolfgang Richter, the company’s second shareholder, he brings more than 30 years of experience in the biotech industry. Together, they have founded several companies in Germany and abroad. With their Stuttgart-based company MolGenie, they are now expanding to Leipzig. Thanks to his time at the university, Dr. Weber is highly familiar with the region’s advantages as a business location.
“Leipzig offers an excellent environment for start-up creation, along with comprehensive support from policymakers, banks, and local authorities. In addition, the city provides an outstanding academic landscape with renowned institutes and universities, a strong tradition in the chemical industry, and, not least, a skilled workforce with exactly the expertise we need,” he says.
Weber also sees Leipzig’s large number of IT companies as a significant advantage. MolGenie uses artificial intelligence to develop specialized molecules for new pharmaceutical products, including treatments for diseases of the central nervous system. At the same time, the company provides chemoinformatics services, developing advanced computational methods to extract and analyze relevant research knowledge from existing documents.

Invest Region Leipzig GmbH (IRL) supported MolGenie in finding suitable office space and chemical laboratories for molecule production and provided information on funding opportunities available in the region.
